Higgins Homes Rewarded for Design Excellence in Prestigious Awards

Posted 18/10/2018

Higgins Homes was among a group of elite winners at the Hertfordshire Building Futures Awards on Thursday 4th October at Knebworth House. Established in 2009, the Awards celebrate schemes at the forefront of sustainable design and construction in Hertfordshire by both the industry and local authorities.

Higgins was shortlisted, and then went on to be awarded a Highly Commended, in the Design Excellence category for The Reserve in Waltham Cross, a development of contemporary three, four and five bedroom houses on the boundary of Lea Valley Regional Park.

The Reserve was recognised because it was able to demonstrate sustainability, innovation and high-quality construction in design in response to environmental challenges. Higgins Homes worked closely with Fourpoint Architects and the local planning authority to consolidate the ambitious vision for The Reserve.

The Design Excellence category was judged by industry professionals with many years’ experience in the building sector. Colin Heal, Director of ZEHo Projects Ltd, a sustainable project management consultancy, David Jennings, Design Director at award winning practice EPR Architects, Jon Rowland, Director of Jon Rowland Urban Design Ltd and Dr. David Strong, internationally recognised expert in sustainable building design and refurbishment and Director of David Strong Consulting Ltd.

The award for The Reserve was particular notable given the diverse range of entries, which included the University of Hertfordshire’s New Science Building and the Cassiobury Park Hub Building in Watford. Judges praised the Higgins Homes scheme on a number of levels including its bespoke design, not using a standard house type, strong masterplan that is very legible with a clear focus and the houses are designed to have plenty of light and make the most of their spacious interior.

“We have housing crisis in this country,” said Jon Rowland. “Government has handed over responsibility to deliver new houses, suburbs and settlements to the private sector. Much of that is developed by volume house-builders, who have standard typologies that are ubiquitous and lead to development without character. So it was really interesting to see a scheme (The Reserve) that is intent on establishing its own identity.”

Higgins Homes was commended for building a development on a brownfield site that will create a new edge to Waltham Cross. The judges said it abuts the Lea Valley Park, and provides car parking for visitors to this regional amenity, it actually provides lifetime homes and the visibility of the car is reduced. “This sets it apart from much other new housing development taking place in this country,” they said.

The judges’ comments on The Reserve included: “A good contemporary take on a traditional form that sets a high design bar for new housing. An exemplar."

After attending the Awards evening, Jeremy Marcus, Sales & Marketing Director at Higgins Homes said: “To be judged as an exemplar development of new housing by the judges in this category among such notable architecture, is high praise, and we are delighted with the finished product and the feedback from our customers.

“The concept behind The Reserve was to create a dynamic combination of contemporary-style living within idyllic surroundings, on the edge of a park location adjacent to Lea Valley Regional Park. We knew we wanted to build a development that would take full advantage of its location with stunning scenery. We combined this with adding an elegant, modern twist to the town’s traditional architecture to build homes where design and functionality worked hand in hand.”
